Ship Story
After many travels...
The Captain
- By Stalkie McGroper
An icy wind both cold and true
Rips through the sails but they hold to
Gloved hand on the rail – his face ashen, pale
A devil’s eye upon his crew
Though strong and stoic in his standing
The crew secretly wonders what he’s planning
The rigging creaks – and tarred lines speak
“Its just sangria his hearts demanding”
The crew all snickers and the captain glowers
They catch his eye and then they cower
A polished deck – he cracks his neck
Behind flaming eyes a harnessed power
“2 points larboard” we hear him call
His voice its own enchanted squall
The helm is turned – a lantern burned
As the moon began to fall
“Land Ho!” a cry, a cheer a scream
The mate looks to the captain who just gleamed
The bell rang 4 – the mate then swore
“It’s like the dying of a dream”
The captain turned and shook his hand
“The ship’s now yours to command”
He winked and eye – and pointed line
“To New Orleans is where we’ll land”
Once in port the crew took their leave
Alone on the deck just the captain and me
“I’ll teach them, sir – Like you taught me”
“I wish you fair winds and following seas”
...To Absent Friends.
