The bastard son of an Irish rover and an eastern European gypsy, I was never accepted by my mother’s people. I was a reminder of the shame she had brought upon her and her people, and neither she nor they could ever forgive me for that. Born under a full moon in October, some said I was cursed. Naturally, all of this left me with the bitter taste of ashes. When they abandoned me in the Port of Constanta in my twelfth or thirteenth year, I took Ash as the name I would rise to glory under. I spent a short time running around with a band of street thieves, but was brought before the magistrate when they abandoned me to my fate during a strong arm robbery gone awry. The magistrate heard my story, took pity upon me and gave me a choice: cabin boy upon a navy ship or to swing in the gallows. Not much of a choice, really. I entered service to escape hanging and sailed away from Constanta. I tried to give an honest life a chance, but the joys of larceny had already taken root in my heart. The next time we made port, I jumped ship with the first mate’s coffer and the surgeon’s stash of “medicinal” brandy. I stowed away on a Spanish galleon headed for Madrid and prayed for swift journey with no discovery. This was not to be, however. The captain caught me as we were drawing nigh to England. Luckily, I was able to bribe him with the money from the first mate’s coffer to drop me at the nearest port, which happened to be the Isle of Wight. From the Isle of Wight I managed to bribe or work my way on various ships to the Rogue port of Tortesca de Porpoise. I spent some time working in the harbor where much to my surprise I found one of my mother’s people, a slip of a girl going by the name Fidget. I survived by running small cons and rolling drunks, but was in need of big haul, and I was looking for a suitable ship to sail on. Then one day, the Rising made port, hull filled near to bursting with gold and jewels, led by none other than Captain Full Moon. Taking this as a sign that my ship had come in, I managed to meet with him and his quartermaster about joining his crew. I was allowed to join the crew and soon worked my way through the coxswain’s position to the bos’un’s position and then took the place of the quartermaster. After a few more hauls, The captain decided to go into retirement. Shortly after he retired, I left the sea and managed to acquire a lucrative position first as the Dock Master at the local Harbour, and then as the Port Master. I have risen from the ashes of my youth to great heights.
