My story, hmm well perhaps that is a tale worth telling. I was born to a family of travelers. “It takes a village to raise a child.” That’s what mama always told us. I had two older siblings, both of them were my half siblings and later on I would be given a baby brother. My mama taught me everything about the myth and lore of our people and from Ireland where she was born. I showed promise as a tarot reader and many of the people who traveled with us would come to my mama and me with their problems. My papa was a strict man, and was never faithful to my mama, one night as I lay under the stars gazing at their beauty, I heard my parents arguing. This wasn’t an uncommon occurrence, so I didn’t think much of it, until I heard my mama scream. I ran into the caravan to see my mama laying on the ground bleeding. A rage that I had never felt before filled me as I took in the scene; my papa stood above her a blade in his hand as he looked up at me. “I didn’t mean to… I…” He started to stumble with his words and fell to his knees sobbing. Though he truly looked sorry for what he had done, nothing could stop the fires burning in my soul. I grabbed the frying pan from the wall and walked up to the crying man, and took my weapon to his head. I pounded and pounded until there was nothing left of his head, and then I grabbed my mama’s body and using all my strength I carried her to the sea nearby. I laid her body in the waters and called out to the Gods.

I was met by Calypso, Goddess of the seas. She looked at me and then at my mama, I gathered all my courage I had within me and made my request. “Calypso, great Goddess, I will pay any price for the life of my mama to be restored.” She looked back at me, and I couldn’t tell if it was the water rolling from her graceful face or if she shed a tear for my request but she simple nodded and took my right hand. She held it and when she removed it, there was a black spot. Then she laid her hands over my mamas wound and water began to fill it and spill over with a great force. My mama gasped loudly as she returned and I hugged her tightly. She looked to see the beautiful image of Calypso standing before us and looked back at me.

 +
“Child, what have you done?” she asked me in a very serious tone her face with a look of fear on it.
 +

 +
“I called to her to bring you back mama. I told her I would pay any price.” I stated it with all the love and worry I felt for my mama.
 +

 +
Then she spoke, “I have given you a black spot child, you will have but five years until you must step into these waters again, that is when the debt shall be paid. But if you fail to do so, your mother will suffer an even more painful death.” With that the Goddess vanished and my mama and I were left on our own.

My siblings all came running up asking what had happened, that papa was dead. I explained everything to them and it was decided that we would burn our caravan and start over using our mother’s maiden name. We traveled back to my mama’s Ireland, a beautiful and lush country; the hills sang a song both beautiful and sad. But my admiration would soon wane, we needed money to survive in this land and soon we all needed to find jobs. Mama and my sister Serena found work in a local pub; Todd took to pick-pocketing but was soon imprisoned for it. My baby brother Magnus found work as a leather apprentice and I worked scrubbing floors in the pub my mama and sister worked in. Even so, work was hard and for little pay. I worked until I was 13 when I was finally allowed to serve to the patrons of the pub. There were all sorts who came through, most of which requested my sister or my mama to serve them. One night however, a man asked for me specifically. I was a little taken aback by this as I had never seen this man before nor did my sister or mama. I walked up to him and asked him what he’s have when he reached for my right hand. He removed the strip of cloth I used to hide it and started mumbling to himself. “Is there something wrong sir?” I asked a little nervous that he was studying my mark so intently.
 +

 +
“Tell me lassy, how did ya get this mark? Yer not a sailor and yer not a pirate, so did ya come across it?” He looked into my eyes and I could tell he was very serious in receiving an answer. I straightened my back and pulled my hand away.
 +

 +
“Calypso gave it to me, as price for bringing my mama back to me, now what will ya gave sir?” he chuckled to himself and ordered a pint of cider. Throughout the night he ordered 5 more and then had me sit with him.
 +

 +
“Lassy do ya know who I am?” he slurred in his drunken state.
 +

 +
“No one in this pub knows who you are sir.” I answered him honestly. He leaned forward and looked me in my eye once again and in that moment I noticed something odd about his eyes, how they shone like a silver sphere even though the color was all wrong.
 +

 +
“My name, lassy, is Captain Full Moon.” He said this in a rather hushed voice.
 +

 +
“I’m sorry Captain but I am unfamiliar with you.” I said shaking my head. “Do you run a merchant ship?” I asked curiously, and that made him laugh loudly and slam his hand against the table.
 +

 +
“I suppose ya could call it that, lassy.” That was when I managed to put it together, this man, was a pirate!
 +

 +
“You’re a pirate!” I exclaimed it as I figured it out. His clothes, his hat, his odor… he smiled at me and nodded his head slightly.
 +

 +
“And I can help ya with that little mark there, for a price of course.” I was startled by this, reversing the will of the Gods? How was this possible?
 +

 +
“What price would that be?” I asked this to hide how eager I was to do whatever it took.
 +

 +
“Ya see that lady over there taking men’s names down?” I looked over and saw a very seriously looking lady asking questions to men who were waiting in a line.
 +

 +
“Yes I do.” I stated.
 +

 +
“Go talk to her, tell her I sent ya over with special circumstances.” I nodded and walked over to the line.
 +

 +
It was this time my mama spotted me and ran over to me. “Child what are you doing? These are pirates!” She whispered harshly into my ear.
 +

 +
“I know mama, but one of their captains said he could help me remove the spot.” I looked into her eyes. “Would you have me die returning to those waters? Or would you rather I leave you to die?” I asked her and she shook her head not expecting my questioning. “If this man can help us both live, I’ll do whatever it takes.”
 +

 +
I looked ahead and my mother hugged me tightly and handed me a necklace. “I was going to save it for your birthday, but I think you need it now, this will bring you luck my child. I love you.” She kissed my head and walked away
 +

 +
I looked at the necklace and at first I couldn’t tell what it was, then upon closer inspection it was a flower with a stone set in the middle. That was when it was my turn. I stepped up to the table and the woman never looked up at me. “Name?” she asked very coldly.
 +

 +
“My name is Dimetra.”
 +

 +
At that point she glanced up “A woman eh? Haven’t had one of yer kind try to join in a while. Why do ya wanna join?” I explained to her what Captain Moon had told me and she sighed. “That damn old drunkard, well I suppose a deal is a deal and we could use someone who can actually cook on board.” I was told that I would sail with them for a year, and if I worked hard, and proved myself an able hand the captain would take me to a witch doctor who could remove my mark.
 +

 +
And work hard I did, I cleaned, cooked, sewed and even fought without thanks given. The year mark came, and the captain called me in to speak with him, I walked into his cabin and he stood pacing slowly and motioned for me to sit. “Lassy, ya’ve worked hard on this ship, even without being seen as crew.” He said this with a very stern look on his face as he walked up to me. He looked down and grabbed my shoulders firmly and I feared I was going to be told I hadn’t worked hard enough. He started smiling and hugged me firmly. “We’re already on course to the witch doctor! We’ll get ya fixed up and home as fast as her sails can.” I smiled but then the idea of leaving struck me. For a year these people had become my family and this ship my home. I was told we would arrive in a months’ time, that night lay unable to sleep with the thoughts of leaving swimming in my head. I had gone to so many places, I had fought alongside pirates, I had fixed them, entertained them, and now in a few short months I would go back to being a pub wench, or worse, be married off.

We arrived at the dock, the crew finding the nearest pub while the captain took me to the witch doctor who was said to be able to fix anything. We stood at a small hut, covered in animal bones with smoke rising from the chimney and the sound of crickets and frogs filled the air. “Now lassy before I take ya in there, you must know this person is dangerous, so don’t do anything stupid.” I nodded and he knocked on the door. An old woman answered the door and looked at both of us and nodded walking away and we followed her in. Without a single word she sat me down in a very crudely built chair and took my hand into hers. She made an odd noise while looking at my hand and then stood and started looking through cabinets and jars of all shapes and sizes. As she did I looked around and saw all sorts of strange runes, trinkets, and books. She came back with a jar filled with what looked like a purple paste, as she opened it a rancid odor filled the hut and I felt my stomach turning from it. Before I could stop myself I had vomited on the floor, and it just kept coming. Eventually it turned red with my blood and I felt the air change, then I hit the floor.

I stood before Calypso, and she looked down upon me her face saddened. She touched my cheek softly “Child, you have risked your life, gone to the ends of the earth and back to find a way out of your debt. For this I will grant you your wish, however, it is up to those whom you came with to return your life.” I was shocked by what she had said. I was dead, and I had to be saved by the captain and the witch doctor. I looked up at her my eyes filled with dread before she started to fade before my eyes, like a mist blown out by the wind. I heard someone calling for me, from what seemed like so very far away, and I ran to that voice. I ran as fast as my legs would allow but the voice still seemed so far away. I finally reached it and I stretched my hand out for that voice. That was when I awoke. I sat up screaming, my eyes spinning from all the shapes and lights coming back to me. Eventually I refocused and saw not the captain there, but my mama. I was shocked, how was she here? I didn’t care right at that moment I hugged her tightly to me. However I had to know, “Mama how are you here?” I asked her holding her face.

She smiled her sweet smile and kissed my forehead “I never left you, Captain Moon agreed to me coming as long as I was never seen by you.” I looked around to find him but he was gone.

In that moment I stood and ran for the door and back to the dock, as I reached it I saw The Rising sailing away and I watched her sail away into the seas. He said he’s never seen someone who was so able to become a pirate.” She held my shoulder and looked me in the eyes “That is, if you want to become one. Or that ship over there will take ya home.” I looked at the ship, and then back to the fading Rising. “Have it take my mama home, but I’m staying.” I said it as I stared at my home fading away into the horizon. I swore to myself that I would be the best damn pirate the world had ever seen. “Well ya know not many will take a lady on board we should give ya a new name.” she said matter-of-factly. “You’re right, what would be a good name for me?” she looked me up and down and smiled. “Roberts. You look like a Roberts.”
