Ship Song

The Rising (c) 2006, Steven K. Mariner

Oh, the Rising was a fearsome ship, she plundered night and day
And she was known to all the lads who sailed from ol' Stokes Bay
And her captain was a lively man who grinned from ear to ear
And many a merchant captain learned to run from him in fear.

CHORUS:
It's the Rising, the terror of the seven seas
She'd gather all their plunder and they'd spend it where they please
It's the Rising, and the dreaded Captain Moon --
Don't worry boys, you know you'll be home soon.

Now her captain was a keener man than most who sailed the blue
He went ashore to find a pub and thus relieve the crew
But the cider caught their fancy there, or so the tale is told
And the captain said they'd sit and drink 'til they ran out of gold.

(CHORUS)

Now the plunder they had gathered was the Jolly Roger's pride
They could not spend enough of it no matter how they tried
So out upon the bay you'll see the Rising shedding tears
For they're so rich they've been in port for nigh on fifteen years!

(CHORUS) (End the Chorus very slow and with prominent rhythm)

On a dark and dreary highway, I was travelling by the moon
That kind of light and misty night that makes the lovers swoon
When I saw her in the harbour, standing naked as a sprite
Her sails were torn and tattered -- she made a sullen, eerie, bale, and dreadful sight.

(Like the Chorus, only slow and emotional):

It was the Rising, once a terror of the seas
But now she sits in silence just as ghastly as you please
And they say the sea is salty from the running of her tears --
So drink up me boys and spend that swag on a-nother round of beer!

(CHORUS)

(Like the Chorus, but with a slower and metered rhythm):

She is the Rising, oh, a terror of the seas
And good old Captain Moon, he always brings them to their knees
She is the Rising, and she's waiting for her crew... (fermata...)
Don't worry, dear, you know they'll be home soon.
Don't worry girl, the boys will be home..........sooon!
