My name is Jezel Di Romanov. Or Balishnika of The Manor. Or Barba Corpus the Black. Or Squidgy-Plop Flim-Flam McGrrrrr. Or Victoria, depending on whom you ask. Or Calypso.<br />

I was born to a family of nomadic gypsies who were quite poor, but very proud of their heritage. But on the frosty Yuletide evening that I was born, the people in our caravan became anxious with fear, for they saw that I was covered from head to toe in a fine fur....<br />
They felt the touch of Beelzebub upon me, as did my own kin as well, and they cast me out into the wilderness in fear and disgust, to live amongst the wolves and the swamp weasels.<br />

And live there I did; feral like Mowgli with a pack of wild canines; and it was there, surrounded by the acceptance of those savage dogs, that I lost the fur that had so far blighted my life. You see, I am an Anthromorph; a shape-shifter; and my talent manifests itself in response to sensations - like temperature and loud goth music - and also to stress. (I figured being born would be stressful enough, but on a January night too...?! - I really had no chance!)<br />
<br />
Winter became Spring. Amongst these dogs, I lived as a Free Spirit, and they started to see me as one of their own - they accepted me for whatever I was. Here, in the Wilderness, I found true Inner Peace.<br />
<br />
Naturally, once I shed my fur, my pack, seeing I was human, first converged on me, fangs a-blazing, and then had the good grace just to leave me to rot, half-dead and bleeding, out on the hillside.<br />
<br />
Fortunately, I was spotted not long after by passing hikers who brought me back to civilization, where one of them adopted me as one of his own; and let me live with his fine family in a fantastic manor on the hillside, with a hundred bedrooms and butlers and maids and acres of land, such that the Master could cast his eye out across it from his balcony and know that all that he surveyed was his.<br />
<br />
It was there that I was educated in the fine arts of the time - I learnt to walk and talk like a lady, and how to dress and behave like one; and skills like cooking and sewing, crochet and glass-blowing, and making little chocolates; and also which fork to use for eating jellied eels at a posh dinner.<br />
<br />
Sadly, my time at the manor was to be short-lived, for it was nary sixteen brief months since my arrival when my Lord was sent down for masterminding a treasonous plot to introduce the mass retail of flush toilets to every householder in the land:<br />
This was quite unpopular with the powers-that-were, you see, on account of their fondness for that now long-forgotten game, once so favoured by society's upper crust, in which contestants did their best to re-affirm their position over the masses by literally taking position over the masses out the window in true Black Adder fashion. Not nice for the masses; even less nice, I'm afraid, for my Lord and his family - - He was sentenced to a fate worse than a fate worse than death; the family were made to eat brussel sprouts and asparagus and then banished from the land, and the servants were all mercilessly insulted and then tickled to death.<br />
<br />
I escaped to the street, where I earned my living variously as a Thief, a Busker, a Mime, a Beggar, and a Speller of Toonerisms; until one day, pacing up and down the docks of a town that had lost all its wonder, weary of life and all of its vagrancies, I perchanced to happen upon The Rising, in all of its dark glory: What a magnificent, forbidding, fantastic ship it looked, gleaming in the moonlight like a dabloon in a wishing-well. 'The Rising': It was exactly what I needed at that point in my life. A Second Coming.<br />
<br />
Without a moment's hesitation, I jumped on board the ship, careful not to let anyone see me. I had nothing to regret in leaving, and for me, a new lease on life was just the ticket.<br />
<br />
I was discovered before long, of course; soon after the ship had set sail for the New World, intent on plundering, savaging, ravaging and looting whatever they might find there. Of course, I was terrified that all of the men on board would just want to rape me- I had never even been with a man before! - but lucky for me as soon as that fear fell upon me I was again covered in fur like a rabid ape, and so none of the scoundrels wanted to have anything to do with me.<br />
<br />
Realizing that I was too skinny for eating, [[Captain]] [[Full Moon]] asked me if I could make myself useful some other way, at which point - feeling the alternatives were most probably to be sold as a slave or to be forced to walk the plank - I thought it best to reveal my talents as a cook, a seamstress, a crochet-weaver, a glass-blower and a chocolatiere*. Astounded though he was that a chimpanzee could do all these things (for, being fuzzy, that is what all of the men assumed I was), El Capitano offered me the opportunity to prove myself, which I did in earnest. I became part of the crew, and again, at last, I found acceptance.<br />

I became the sail-maker on this ship, a true Rising for me, and I have found where I Belong.<br />

I was born in Stuttgart, Germany. When I was only three years old my mother moved us to Essen, Germany. My mother told me that we moved because my father was trying to kill me because he didn’t want a child. Life was quiet until I was nine years old; my mother got incredibly ill. We couldn’t afford for a doctor to come and see to her. I soon learned how to cook, clean, take care of myself and my mother, and I was already working when I turned ten. My mom withered away little by little. She couldn’t walk, she had a hard time breathing, she was coughing up blood, and so much more. She soon died two years after she first had signs of her illness. I was twelve years old when she died. I was left alone to fend for myself and try to stay alive. <br />
When I turned thirteen a man picked me up off of the streets and gave me work and a home. He ran his own butcher shop; people in the shop would call him Al. He had lost his wife in child birth and needed someone to care for his small children and help in his shop, he would soon decide to make a change in his life and move to England. <br />
I decided I had nothing left in Germany, so I agreed to join him and made my way to England. Because he was a friend to my late mother's, the terms of the contract I signed were quite generous. In exchange for my passage, I had to sign a document which indentured me to him and his family for a period of 4 years. In the mean time my food, clothing, and living expenses were paid for by Al as if I were his own child. Once we arrived in England he set up shop and we began to work. There I learned about different kinds of meat and how to cook them. He also taught me how to read and write. I was soon cooking and caring for him and his son, Alexander Jr., and his daughter Clarissa. <br />
He was my master and a father too of sorts. Even though he was harsh with me most of the time, he still cared for me like I was his own daughter. Alexander on the other hand was very sweet and generous in offering me help. Al soon gave me the name Amelia (which in German is “work”) and my last name was changed to the same as his and his son’s, Koch (cook). <br />
I soon turned sixteen and Al gave me some extra cash to go out on my own and travel around to figure out what I really wanted to do with myself. Alexander gave me a set of my own knives that shined like diamonds in my hands. I was soon on my way to Paris, France hoping to find someone that would take me to work as their apprentice chef. <br />
I traveled by carriage, I walked; sometimes someone was nice enough to give me a horse. I had enough money for the ship cost but little else. When I got to Paris it was almost my 17th birthday. I looked around the city hoping to find someone who would take me in, but everywhere I went I was rejected and had several doors slammed in my face. Days went by without any results. I would sleep on the streets, sleeping with all my belongings in my arms. I would buy food with the little money Al had given me, that was left after my voyage from England. I was walking through town half starved and extremely thirsty when finally I found a kind gentleman who was willing to take a chance on me, Henry. I spent two years in his care and apprenticed under him refining my cooking skills. Sadly one day shortly after my 19th birthday I found out that Henry was to be taken prisoner and scheduled to be hanged for crimes against the King. I knew these were hollow accusations but there was no way to prove his innocence. If I went back to his home I would also be taken prisoner. I had to leave immediately. <br />
I sold what I could and decided to return to England and then for no reason at all I made my way to Wales, there I was once again with no home no family and half starved. I had over heard two people talking about looking for people to join their crew. They split up and this man walked by me and gave me one look and outstretched his hand to mine. He looked at me and smiled. I wasn’t sure what to do so I took his hand, hoping that he wasn’t going to try and kill me or something. He started talking to me in this language I didn’t quite understand. I told him in German that I didn’t know what he was saying. He smiled again and started talking again but this time I understood what he was saying. <br />
“Why aren’t you a half starved little thing,” he said chuckling. He pulled me up so I was standing. He looked at me with a stern look and then walked around me. I wasn’t sure what he was doing but I just stood there. He was now again standing in front of me and looked me in the eyes. He looked down and saw that I had a knife set in my arms. <br />
“Are you a cook?” <br />
I shook my head in agreement not knowing what else to do at the time. <br />
“I am looking for a few shipmates would you care to join me and my crew in our voyages and cook for the crew?” I stood there for a moment wondering if I should or not. <br />
I looked up at the old man, “I would be delighted since there’s nothing here for me.” <br />
He stood up straight, ”GREAT! I am called [[Captain Morgan]], Captain David Morgan to be exact, but you can call me [[Captain Morgan]]. Here I will show you the way to the ship and you can go ahead and make yourself comfortable in the cook’s quarters.” <br />
I turned around and grabbed my remaining money and belongings and followed [[Captain Morgan]] to his ship. When we got there I almost dropped my things in amazement in how beautiful his ship was. It was black with a crimson red trimming. There were gold railings, and the sails were as red and dark as blood. There were men running around getting prepared for Morgan’s arrival. They all stood in an orderly fashion, well sort of. Most of them were very young and shabby looking. [[Captain Morgan]] began ascending to the ship and waited for me to come aboard. I hurried to his side not knowing what I was getting myself into. He turned to his men and again starting talking in a language that I did not understand. He turned to me and smiled and introduced me to everyone on the ship. His first mate was a woman that stood proudly in front of them. They called her [[Mistress Blade]]. There was another woman next to her who was the [[Quartermaster]] she was called [[Tempest Stormbringer]]. They both stood proudly and once we went down under the deck footsteps could be heard above us running around trying to finish getting ready to leave. We got down to the cook’s quarters and I soon settled in nice and comfy. [[Captain Morgan]] left me to make arrangements in the cabin. I was soon finding myself organizing everything and soon I had everything where I wanted it to be. The cabin was a lot bigger after organizing everything. I was able to find a bed behind everything. I soon went up on deck and we were just sailing away from Wales. That was the last time I felt like an orphan, now I have a family, strange as they may be. Jaded (real name unknown) took that name at the age of 16, after a childhood fraught with frustration and little love. The daughter of a Navy Captain, her mother disappeared or dead, she was passed around from relative to relative, only too happy to take the money from her father for upbringing, but never actually doing the work. She learned to fend for herself at a young age, wandering the streets at all hours, learning the simpler thieving skills, playing with the other unwanted urchins. <br />

Upon one visit from her father near her 14th birthday, he was so dismayed at her appearance and apparent lack of any manners resembling those of a lady that he decided it was time to take her care and upbringing into his own hands. He took her aboard ship. That year was one of the happiest in her life. She spent hours with her father learning etiquette and manners, and while the lessons themselves were less then enjoyable, the time with her father was precious beyond compare. When she wasn’t being lessoned, she was slowly learning the ins and outs of the ship, taught knot tying and some of the simpler tasks by an indulgent crew who took her on as a kind of mascot. This life was to be short lived however. <br />
<br />
On the eve of her 15th birthday, and just coming into true womanhood, her father’s ship was attacked during the blackest of nights. Pirates, fierce and bloody, boarded and destroyed everything, taking the stores and killing the crew. She watched as her father was cut down by the Captain of the Pirates. They would have cut her down as well, but for the staying hand of that same Captain. He thought her a pretty little thing, slightly exotic, presumably from her mother’s side. He knew a place she would be well paid for. <br />
<br />
After months of travel aboard the Pirate ship, where against all odds she befriended them as well, she was deposited on a doorstep, and presented to the Madame of the Eilean er Coayl Grayse. However, at that point the Pirate Captain had grown quite fond of the young girl, and rather then sell her off into slave labor, he petitioned the Madame to apprentice her in the House, teaching her what she would need to know to survive. The Madame, a good natured woman with a wink in her smile, agreed, and took the girl in. No name was given, just a year of “hey girl” whenever she was needed. On the night of her first presentation, a coming out if you will, the Madame asked her what name she would go by. I am the first born daughter of an Irish Catholic father (who is rumored to have the blood of the peoples of the New World in him as well) and an English Protestant mother, both of whom were disowned by their families for the scandal. A restless and not-quite-proper girl, I sought adventure from an early age, running away and disguising myself as a boy to join an army unit. <br />

After several years of fighting in strange places all over the known world, I found myself in Larkspurshire. I assumed the identity of Gabby Longjaw, the idiot daughter of a ship’s captain, in an attempt to keep people from guessing my true identity. This didn’t go so well as hoped, given that people thought Gabby was ‘cute.’ Eventually, I met up with a man called Captain Walker. Thinking to make names for ourselves, we assumed the identities of Richard Burke and Grace O’Malley, and gained ourselves a crew of the real Richard Burkes’ daughters (who had no idea what their father really looked like, and were content to believe Captain Walker was he). It was quite cheap labor, actually, since these girls were willing to do anything for their ‘beloved father’. <br />
<br />
After several profitable and adventurous years together, Captain Walker and I were eventually found out. The ship’s crew disbanded, and he set sail for other waters. Interestingly enough, nobody took our lies and deceit as insults—I suppose they thought it to be the true nature of pirates. <br />
<br />
I made friends with a number of delightfully naughty wenches in the shire, who eventually asked me to lead them for awhile. While it was great fun, I decided that the task was best suited to Jess Devyne’s worthy skills, but maintained contact with the ladies. I decided to devote more time to studying a dance that I’d chanced to see upon one of my adventures to the desert countries, eventually seeking a place to showcase my talent and skill, which lead me to requesting a place in Madam Cricket’s house, where Jess Devyne also now was. Born to an Irish mother and a Scottish father, hatred of the English was in my blood. Not only was this distaste supported by my family, it was encouraged, as was education, for that matter. “Education is power, education is the road to freedom” my father would say. My father and uncle were both doctors, though of a philosophical nature, not a medicinal path like my own. Early on I knew medicine was my true calling.<br />
<br />
I apprenticed under a druidic healer for years and studied the ancient healing powers of plants and herbs as many of my Celtic ancestors had. This foundation for my journey proved very useful. I trained in modern medicine for years, but as I developed my practice, I was unable to find the excitement I had always imagined, the real action was out at sea. My desire was to help the people who were suffering at the hand of the English, teach them modern theories of how to stay healthy and heal their illnesses and injuries when needed, as I could. <br />
<br />
During my years of training, I frequently found myself in need of relaxation. This was something I found in dancing and drinking, an unusual practice, perhaps, for someone studying how to keep the body healthy. It didn’t matter. The music, I enjoy a dark, earthy sound. It didn’t matter the drink. I prefer something strong, yet smooth.<br />
<br />
During the years of staying out at the pubs until the wee hours of the morning, I met a handsome fellow by the name of Keith. He was fun to talk and flirt with, and we enjoyed each other’s company as friends do. He introduced me to quite a few of his friends and family over the years, many of whom referred to him as Jereth, most of whom seemed to share my love of the sea. One may assume that I would’ve instantly connected with these people and taken them into my life as my own kin, but fear and apprehension would stop me,for years. In order to understand this, I must take you back to my youth, nearly 20 years ago.<br />
I didn't always have a strong voice, I used to be nearly meek, in fact. Agreeable to a fault. I had to learn from some horrible experiences. As a youth, there were many things in my life that I tolerated that I may not have if I were older and more comfortable with my voice, as I am now. One of these things being a villain of a man that called himself by the name of a noble feline, whom I will simply refer to as "pussy" from here out. At a time when I was otherwise disillusioned by a suitor who I lived with, the pussy was our roommate. This was my gullible and naive phase, otherwise known as young and dumb.<br />
<br />
During this vulnerable time in my life, like a ray of light, a strong, beautiful young lady's presence was a saving grace. Though she was hardly my senior in age, I looked up to her. She was level headed, of similar spiritual beliefs to my own and we were further bonded through our common dislike of the fool named pussy. Her name was Traveler Hawk. We were reunited several years after having fallen out of touch with one another and she too, was a part of this group of sea-fairing folk. In fact, she was a Captain. All the more reason to admire this strong woman. She is even more beautiful because of her strength.<br />
<br />
Though pussy man did not leave me with any permanent scars, the foul taste in my mouth still lingers and when I see him, I wince in disgust with clinched fists. Over the years, I had witnessed him spending time in the same vicinity as these kinsfolk of Jereth. Ashamed though I may be, I categorized these people poorly due to their fraternization with the pussy and it took me over ten years to change my mind.<br />
<br />
Shortly after concluding my studies in medicine, I came to know a young Frenchman by the name of Tony. We would frequently play cards together at the neighborhood pub and go to the dancehalls followed by a bite to eat shortly before sunrise. Tony was a wonderful friend in my life shortly after experiencing quite a few losses, understandably, we grew close quickly.<br />
<br />
Just as happens in most new friendships, we introduced each other to several of our friends, some of whom were common between us without our knowledge. For the third time over nearly 10 years, I was introduced to “Rogues” through someone I trusted. That being said, I decided to give this wild bunch a chance and haven’t regretted it yet. I let the Frenchman know about my concerns with this haunt from my past, and through a few old-timers in the group I was assured that he was barely an acquaintance of a few people in the group, and was NEVER a member. I was further assured within only a week of being embraced by this family that he was never going to be an issue, because I was already valued and cared for. The foundation had been set for the building of a new family.<br />
<br />
Right off the bat, I was welcomed by the group so warmly, it was moving. At one of my first weekend camping experiences with them, I arrived equipped with over a gallon of whiskey and rum as well as food to share with all. It was then that I learned the capacity this group of pirates had for drinking, they were my kind of people. <br />
<br />
With such a large group of people who like to drink, accidents are bound to happen. My medical background was probably going to come in handy in one way or another, sooner than later. “Sooner” came quickly. It was the night following my pledge to join this rowdy band of miscreants. I would spend the next year trying to prove my worth and find my home amongst this family. <br />
<br />
The first time I camped with the Rogues while on shore leave, during a sparring match, someone with a pre-existing injury and a bit of booze on the breath twisted his knee. A couple months later, the same fellow drank a bit too much and was a cause of concern for his friends, so I monitored him closely all night, he was to be fine. <br />
<br />
While monitoring the kid, one of the Captain’s backs had a spontaneous “run-in” with some glass in a special frame, a frame containing our Letter of Marque from the King. No one knows how it happened, it was all very mysterious, really. The captain was being the highly spirited man that we all knew and loved and was resisting my care. I was the lowest ranking person present and was told by the officers in the Captain’s company that I needed to “get it done”. <br />

I was sent to the Harbour and told to seek her upon a vessel known as the Raging Saint Mae. I was given directions to a wooded clearing upon the island and as I approached I heard rythmic chanting and the beat of several drums. I could see shadows upon the hillside like those produced by dancers by a large fire, but before I could move any further to get a better veiw of the clearing I was greeted by an arrow a mere handspan from my face and the lyrical voice of the sentry asking me my business. I quickly rummaged through my memory for the correct response which my lord had bade me to speak. "I search for mischief and Mayhem, sirrah" <br />
Behind me a heard a low growl of a hound, and saw the shadow of yet another rather large greyhound to my side. A hooded woman entered into my veiw but all that I could see was her eyes which were the color of the sky. They glowed in the light of the firelight as she approached me carrying a bow. I removed a bag of gold from my belt and made as if to approach the lady. But the greyhound was in front of me taking the bag from my hand and the other circled as if looking for a reason to attack. As I entered the clearing I saw several people dancing with wild abandon to the chants and the beat of the drums. The Rum and Mead flowed freely and as I waited I found that I could not resist the urge to join in. It was if I was compelled and could not say no.
